FINDINGS

This cross-sectional study used nationally representative data from 199 520 children aged 3 to 17 years who participated in the US National Health Interview Survey from 1997 to 2016. Children with food, respiratory, and skin allergies were significantly more likely to have ASD than children without these allergies.

MEANING

Common allergic conditions, in particular, food allergy, are associated with ASD among US children, but the underlying mechanism for this association needs further study in the Autism treatment in children.

KNOW THE FACTS

  • Mild autistic symptoms are common in children in the spectrum and your kindergarten teacher may give you important insights in early recognition. Due to their learning disability, you may find it difficult to get admission in a school. Always try another school, never give up and never keep your child at home as it may only worsen the symptoms.
  • They don’t like surprises. When you take them to a new place, speak to them and inform them that you’ll be taking him/her to a new place, even if your child is non-verbal (they understand), they have very little patience in a new place. Make your stay brief.
  • Most children have extreme fear. Always assure them and hold them. Physical contact helps.
  • They cannot tolerate certain sounds and may cover their ears. An autistic child can hear many things at a time in the surroundings. Loud sound is repulsive to them, be mindful.
  • Avoid saying NO, distract them instead.
  • They are attracted to bright colours. Bright clothing, bright toys…
